Precious metals
What is sterling silver
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% by weight of other metals, usually copper.
The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness of 925. We never work with plated metals.
Recycled sterling silver is silver which has been collect from industry and 'refined' or melted down to remove impurities. It is then rolled out into sheet or wire for use again.
Some of the recycled metal we use in the workshop is recycled 'in house'.
Why has my jewellery gone black?
Silver will over time, especially if not worn regularly, develop a black tarnish. This is caused by a chemical reaction between the copper in the sterling silver and sulphur containing gases in the air. This is not a sign that your jewellery is cheap! Quite the opposite. But its easy to clean…
How can I clean my silver jewellery?
You can clean your jewellery in a number of ways;
⬡ Often a soft clean duster will do the trick
⬡ Specialist silver cloths and solutions are available to purchase from most hardware stores
⬡ You can place your jewellery in an aluminium foil lined bowl with some baking soda* and boiling water (take care with the boiling water!). Place the items in for a few minutes, if an eggy smell is given off its working (you’re welcome for that!!), then just rinse in clean water and dry with a soft cloth.
*for the geeks among us…. the baking soda creates a small electrolytic current (or salt bridge) between the silver jewellery and the aluminium foil, the sulfur is pulled from the silver onto the foil, so contact between the jewellery and the foil is important.
