Our commitment to sustainability.

As an ex Biology teacher, my understanding of and respect for the natural world forms one of my core values. As a family we spend a lot of time in nature, whether biking or walking through our local forests or coast lines. Since having children, my desire to leave the world a better place has only deepened.

As a wise man in York Mountaineering club once said to me ‘take only pictures, leave only footprints’,

Sustainability is a journey and one that is complicated and often steeped in green washing. As my education continues I make changes in my business and therefore this policy will evolve over time. But I want to tell you where we’re at at the moment.

Metals

As far as possible, Hannah Weston Jewellery manufactures pieces from recycled metals. All metals are purchased from trusted sources and the metals which are recycled are traceable. Recycling metals such as silver and gold is much better for the environment. The process of melting down silver and gold and reprocessing it into wire and sheet is relatively easy and Hannah Weston Jewellery utilises recycled metals in one of three ways:

⬡ New recycled metal is purchased from our trusted supplier to make pieces of jewellery

⬡ Clean scraps of metal are collected from the making process, whether it be in the studio or at a workshop. These scraps are melted down in the workshop and used to create new pieces of jewellery.

⬡ Waste metal containing solder, dust from the jewellery making process (sawing and sanding for example) and all sand paper containing metal fragments are collected and sent away for refining.

Packaging

Hannah Weston Jewellery comes packaged in either a gift box of which the box is made from cardboard or on a branded card in an organic cotton pouch - which we hope you will be able to reuse. All our parcels are sent in letter box friendly mailing box and that, alongside our branded postcards are all recyclable in kerb side recycling boxes.

Next steps

As our education evolves and we learn about ways to reduce the impact of Hannah Weston Jewellery on the environment, we’ll make more changes in the business. If you have any suggestions do feel free to contact me, I’d love to hear from you hello@hannahweston.com.
